Epigenetic and Microbial Profiles Related to Hurricane Maria Prenatal Stressors: Project HELiOS
Carmen J. Buxó, DrPH, MPH, MSc is a genetic epidemiologist with training in maternal/child health research. She is a professor and the Director of the Dental and Craniofacial Genomics Core at the University of Puerto Rico, School of Dental Medicine, and the Mentoring Coordinator at the Postdoctoral Master’s in Clinical and Translational Research. She is also a member of the Pilot Project Program at The Alliance. She is the Director of the first saliva biorepository in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean (CariDen). Dr. Buxo has served as a Co-Investigator and Principal Investigator of NIH grants studying genetic and environmental risk factors for oral clefts in Puerto Rican children. She is one of HELiOS Principal Investigators with Drs. Evangelia Morou and Karen Martinez. Dr. Buxo is overseeing the maternal exposures and birth outcomes associated with prenatal exposure to hurricane Maria in the HELiOS birth cohort. Other research interests include Zika, birth defects, maternal metabolic syndrome, and oral cancer. Dr. Buxo currently serves as councilor of the Puerto Rico Section of the American Association for Dental, Oral, and Craniofacial Research, she is the Assistant Programme Chair (North America) for the Global Oral Health Inequalities Research Network and was appointed to the Journal of Dental Research’s Editorial Board.
