“Scientific Communication in Clinical and Translational Research” is an online course organized by the Professional Development Core (PDC) of the Hispanic Alliance of Clinical and Translational Research (Alliance) and supported by the Hispanics- In- Research Capability: SoHP & SoM Partnership (HiREC) and Hispanics in Clinical and Translational Research Education and Career Development (HCTRECD). The course is open to early- to mid-career investigators with a doctoral degree in basic sciences or a health-related field and engaged in a clinical and translational research project with results ready for dissemination.
From November 2021 to June 2022, the course was offered by Dr. Estela S, Estapé, Ph.D., Professor and MSc Senior Advisor for Research Career Development, UPR-MSC, and director of the San Juan Bautista School of Medicine Research Center. The course objectives were to
-
- Understand the importance of authorship, acknowledgments, and conflict of interest,
- Learn how to review a manuscript
- Complete a scientific manuscript ready for submission to a peer-review journal.
During this period, four participants completed the course (Table 1):
All trainees were highly satisfied with the overall course experience, teaching process, professor/coordinator availability, and expertise (Figure 1).

We are proud to share one of the participant’s comments that reflects on their scholarly productivity as a group:
“This experience contributed to my career development and research efforts by giving me the tools and guiding me step by step on how to write a manuscript by organizing the time needed to read and write each part. In addition, I learned how to be a manuscript reviewer. These experiences gave me the knowledge to improve my writing and the analytical skills needed to become a better science writer and reviewer.”
Finally, we include a summary of the status of each manuscript:
