Dr. Yisel M. Cantres-Rosario, a postdoctoral researcher at the School of Medicine, UPR-MSC received an NIH K22/R00 NINDS Advanced Postdoctoral Career Transition Award to Promote Diversity in Neuroscience Research, which will provide funding to continue her postdoctoral projects and initiate her own research program. The study focuses on how disrupted immunological responses contribute to the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Dr. Cantres-Rosario will develop brain organoids 3D cultures to model NeuroHIV using cells from Hispanic/Latino HIV+ patients, to study the interaction between immune cells and the brain. The results from this study could help identify novel targets to develop therapies against cognitive decline for HIV and Alzheimer’s patients.
