Dr. Evangelia Morou, one of our PIs, has been awarded a United States Patent for the invention of a screening test for caries activity and caries risk assessment based on the combined production of acid and alkali in the oral cavity (Acid-Base Caries Test: ABC-TEST). This patent is founded on NIH-funded clinical/translational studies that have been supported by the Alliance and its predecessor programs (CRC, PRTCRC) over the past 20 years. The invention can help in the early identification of young children at risk for developing caries, which is critical for the prevention and effective management of this condition. Dr. Morou is currently collaborating with Dr. Rosana Hanke from the Pediatric Dentistry Program at the UPR School of Dental Medicine to validate the tests as screening instruments for Early Childhood Caries. These studies are supported by a grant from the Deanship of Research Pilot Project Program (“Oral Acid/Base Production and Early Childhood Caries”, PI: Rosana Hanke).
