The study “Social Determinants of Health and the Participation of Cancer Survivors in Clinical Trials” (AACR Grant # 23-01-SDoH) aims to examine the relationship between Social Determinants of Health (SDoH) and participation in cancer-related clinical trials (CTs) to identify and address barriers disproportionately affecting Hispanic/Latino populations. The study will recruit 300 cancer survivors, with 150 participants from Puerto Rico and 150 African-American women from the Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). In Puerto Rico, we are recruiting gastrointestinal cancer (e.g., colon, rectum, biliary duct, liver, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, small or large intestine, or anus) survivors. Meanwhile, at VCU, we are recruiting breast and gynecological cancer survivors. The objective is to identify and overcome SDoH barriers to promote diverse participation in CTs, enhancing the applicability of research findings. This research can potentially drive policy changes, shape interventions, and foster collaboration across various sectors to address the complex challenges associated with cancer health disparities.
