NATIONAL STRESS AWARENESS MONTH April 2026 |

To the present day, Puerto Rico has endured a series of compounding crises, including Hurricanes Irma and MarΓa, a prolonged economic downturn, a major earthquake sequence (2019β2020), Hurricane Fiona, ongoing sociopolitical and financial instability, and the COVID-19 pandemic. These overlapping stressors have placed a disproportionate burden on communities already facing high levels of poverty and limited access to mental health services.
Approximately 39.6% of Puerto Ricoβs population lives below the poverty line, more than three times the U.S. national average. This socioeconomic vulnerability not only increases exposure to chronic stress but also restricts access to resources needed for effective coping. As a result, studies have documented elevated rates of depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress, sedentary behavior, and unhealthy dietary patterns in the aftermath of these events. |

On April 9, 2026, Dr. Enid GarcΓa served as a featured speaker at the Universidad Central del Caribe Research Symposium, delivering a presentation titled "Navigating non-traditional pathways in research." Her talk highlighted how meaningful clinical research questions often emerge from patients' and communities' lived experiences and emphasized the value of non-traditional research pathways as equally rigorous approaches to knowledge generation. As part of the Public Health Week at Ponce Health Sciences University, Ms. Γngela M. DΓaz presented the conference βNutriendo PR: Where Everyone has a Place at the Tableβ. The session brought together approximately 65 in-person participants, along with additional attendees joining remotely. The presentation emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration to ensure that everyoneβs needs, mainly in the area of nutrition, are reflected in decisions process that impacts community well-being. 10th Interdisciplinary Research Symposium |

San Juan Bautista School of Medicine is proud to share that on April 16th, 2026, we celebrated our 10th Interdisciplinary Research Symposium with great enthusiasm and more than 150 attendees. We had 68 poster presentations, 34 (50%) from SJBSM and 34 (50%) from other institutions.

We were honored to welcome participants from UPR campuses (MSC, Rio Piedras, Cayey, Bayamon, and Humacao), PHSU, UCC, InterAmerican University, Ana G. Mendez University, Universidad Sagrado Corazon, and the Polytechnic University of PR, Caguas Mennonite Hospital, Manati Medical Center, UPR Pediatric Hospital, Women and Children's Hospital, UPR Comprehensive Cancer Center, and the PR Department of the Family.
